Alice V. [probably Virginia] Clem was born 1852 in Warren Co., IN, the 6th and last child of James W. Clem and Louisa Sarah Hand. Her mother was about 42 when Alice was born and Alice's oldest brother, Richard Martin Clem, born in 1830, was 22 years old. Shortly after her birth, in 1853, the family moved to Tama Co., IA. Alice's mother died in 1861 when Alice was only 9 years old, and her father followed in 1868 when Alice was 16.

On 16 Mar 1869, at age 17, Alice married William Francis Smith in Tama, IA. William & Alice according to his obituary, had 2 children who died in infancy, then a boy, Rolland Smith, born 28 Nov 1877 in Iowa City, IA.

Later Alice Smith married John M. Winstead on 18 March 1886 and they had one daughter Jessie Winstead born 3 Sept. 1886 in Garden City, Finney Co., KS. Alice and John Winstead went from Kansas to Colorado City and then to Grand Junction, CO. Then Alice Winstead moved to Ouray, Colorado and John Winstead followed her.

From several newspaper accounts at the time, John Winstead followed Alice to Ouray where he murdered her in front of daughter Jessie age 3 and stepson Rolland, age 12 at the time. He then shot and killed himself. Rolland went back to his family in Iowa and Jessie was raised but never adopted by her aunt and uncle Willis & Georgia Stone Winstead.
