Caryl grew up in Highland Park, and worked in the Civil Service for the Navy at Great Lakes Naval Base. It was at Great Lakes that she met Bemis Carlton and the two wed on June 7, 1952. After leaving the Navy, Bemis and Caryl moved to Detroit, MI. They lived in Detroit for 16 years where they had their four daughters before moving to Arvada, CO in 1968.

Caryl enjoyed researching the family's genealogy and traveling, often combining the two in visiting Civil War memorials and going abroad to Germany where she made friends with distant relatives. She also enjoyed her and Bemis' annual trips to Arizona for baseball's spring training and watching the Colorado Rockies.

Caryl is survived by her brother Wayne (Joan) Wagner, four daughters: Cathy (Mark) Hoag, of Collierville, TN, Suzanne (Alex) Vigil, of Arvada, CO, Pam Carlton, of Missoula, MT, and Lisa (Ray) Gifford, of Golden, CO. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bemis Carlton, and two sisters and two brothers.
