Katherine Deane Real Bird, Shee Da Bud "Red Otter Women," was born October 25, 1937, in Elbowoods, ND Sahnish woman of the Three Affiliated Tribes. On November 5, 2022, the owl called her name to meet her maker. Kathy was the daughter of the late William J. Deane and Leona Yellow Bird Deane. In 1957 she married the late Edison Real Bird (former Chairman of the Crow Tribe) in Missoula, Montana, and they made their home in Crow Agency, MT. Kathy was adopted in the Tobacco Society into the Big Lodge Clan and Child of the Bad War Deeds by the late Jim and Hilda Big Shoulder of Crow Agency, MT. Kathy was baptized as a Catholic but attended other religions. In 1970 she became a strong believer as a member of the Native American Church, Sundance, and Clan ceremonies. She always practiced her daily prayers of devotion to St. Jude, patron of the saints.

She attended elementary school at Elbowoods, ND until the school closed due to the Garrison Dam in 1954. Her education continued at Stephan Catholic school and Flandreau, SD where she graduated. From 1976 to 1979 she entered and continued her education with Contracted Administration Training and Business Management, from Ohio State University under the guidance courses of the Department of Labor. 1980 to 1983 she attended Rocky Mountain College, Billings, MT. From 1984 she received further training in Geriatric Health and Nutrition Care, from the Department of Education, St. Vincent Hospital of Billings, MT, and training courses from the National Association of Meals Programs (NAMP) Region VIII, Denver, CO. Kathy continued and pursued her training Personnel and Administration Education through continued National Career Education of Boulder, CO from 1986 to 1993.

Her last and final position was the Director for Bighorn County Council on Aging Program in Hardin, MT. Kathy worked with all age groups of people. Her many positions include TERO Executive Director, New Town, ND, Appointed Director by Manpower Administration under Region VII by the Department of Labor in Denver, CO. Other positions included JTPA Consultant, Counselor, Coordinator for Manpower Programs, Social Services, Headstart, NYC Drop-outs, BIA Youth Groups, Vietnam Veterans Programs. She also served on many advisory boards, her favorite was the Foster Grand Parent Program affiliated with the St. Vincent hospital Health Care and High Plains Native Women's Museum, Billings, MT. One of her favorite mottos in her employment in North Dakota was "when I work, everyone works."

Years ago, her jobs took her on many travels, another motto was "always leave the door open for future opportunities," and "always have a good word for people you meet." She was asked many times why she stayed as long at her last position. She would state, "I have been everywhere, traveled, did that, been there, all I wanted was to be by my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. "

Her favorite and most precious pastimes were beading moccasins, belts, chokers, necklaces, purses, and other regalia for her family dancers, watching them compete in sports and powwows. Her craftwork and keepsake jewelry were designs of the Sahnish, Hidatsa, and Crow legacies. She would always remind them she had once participated and reminded them not to give up. Kathy watched sports for at least 70 years even competing in barrel racing. During her youth, she was a ranch hand for her father, baled hay, ran farm equipment, fixed fences, rode horses, and fed cattle and other stock at the Deane ranch. Her favorite past time included beading, watching boxing on ShowTime or HBO, horse racing, and playing poker machines at all the casinos. She always encouraged education endeavors among her family.

Kathy is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her son Dr. Lanny Real Bird, and daughters Natalie Real Bird and Rhea Real Bird. Her grandchildren Jace Real Bird Old Elk, Sunny Day Real Bird, Sage Real Bird, Madonna (Terrell Luke) Robinson, Karis Jackson (Leo Bull Child), Lance Yellow Mule, Tommy Real Bird, and Nick (Gabrielle) Real Bird. Great grandchildren, Mecca, Amaya, Jackson Sun Down Bull Child, Amazing Day Real Bird, Trey Don't Mix, Whitney and Reese Robinson, Canyon and Lovey Old Elk, Amar'e, King, Nick Jr, and Kinslee Real Bird, Ayden Andria, A'Raya, Aybrille, and Arbella Yellow Mule.

Kathy was preceded in death by her husband, Edison Real Bird; her parents William (Bill) Deane, Jr.; mother Leona Yellow Bird Deane; aunt Cecilia Brown; aunt Fannie Perkins; and brothers Kenneth Deane, Sr.; Victor Deane, Joseph Deane, Gerald Deane; Evan Gillette; sisters, Marie Wells; Marcella White; Delores Wilkinson; Connie Deane; great-grandson Landon Real Bird; and everyone on the Ft. Berthold reservation who are all related in some way among the Hidatsa and Mandan. Please excuse us if we did not reference your names during this difficult time.

All her nieces and nephews were very special to her, they included the families of the White, White Bear, Wells, the Matt (Screech) Mason family, the Wilkinson, the Gerald and Kenneth Deane family, Evan Gillette family, The Yellow Birds, Bud Mason family, Packineau family, and Adeline Beaks Brunsell & great-grandchildren, they include the Martha Little Light family, Moccasin, and Real Bird families of the Apsaalooke she knew in tradition as her own children.
