Walter's family was living in Camden, NJ when his father Alfred suddenly passed away in 1849 from cholera when Walter was 3 years old. His mother, who had 4 young children to care for, sent Walter to live with his uncle Job Sayre Crane (Alfred's youngest brother) who was married to Walter's mother's sister Eliza Thomas Tompkins in Newark, NJ. This happened before 1850. Walter was never officially adopted by his uncle and aunt.

Job Sayre Crane owned "J. S. Crane Carriage Hardware Company" at 165 Mulberry St., Newark, NJ. When Uncle Job passed away in 1899, Walter took over the business and change the business name to "W.T Crane Carriage Hardware Company" on February 28, 1900.

Walter married Mary Etta Deyo (1851/NY-1937/38)) on May 24, 1870. Their first daughter (name unknown) died as a small child on September 9, 1872. They had one other child Mabel T (1871-1910). When their daughter Mabel passed away in 1910, Mabel's twin daughters Dorothy and Mary moved in with their grandparents.

The Crane's owned a home at 1102 S. Broad Street; Newark, NJ for several years from at least 1900 until Mary Etta passed away in 1937/38. No burial site information has been found.
