Henry Hoffman was born in Germany in 1836. He enlisted in Company M, 2nd Ohio Cavalry on 6 November 1862 and was appointed Corporal on 1 March 1865.
He earned the Medal of Honor on 6 April 1865 at Deatonsville aka Sailor's Creek Virginia where he captured a flag. The exact unit it was captured from is not currently known.
Hoffman mustered out with his company on 28 September 1865 at Benton Barracks, Missouri and disappeared into history. His death and burial are not known.

The man buried in Ohio's St. Josephs cemetery is not the Medal of Honor man. That man was in the US 1st Artillery.
