Mrs. Henry Franklin Staggs

Effie May Carlin, daughter of Mathias and Margaret Carlin, was born March 3, 1876, in Raccoon township, Parke county, and in the early morning hours March 8, 1945, departed this life at the age of 69 years and 5 days.
Her parents were pioneers of Raccoon township and in the locality of her birth she spent her life until she was married. She was educated in the school of her community but life for her was a continuous study, for she eagerly guided and participated in the welfare of her children. November 115, 1895, she was married to Henry Franklin Staggs, who preceded her in death January 19, 1934.
They established their home near Ferndale. To this union were born six children--four sons, Clarence of Ferndale, Frank and Olem of Bridgeton and Hazel of Rockville, and two daughters, Mrs. Ola Walls of Bainbridge and Mrs. Freeman Wilson of Greencastle. She also cared for six step-children--Herman of Tangier, Joe of Greencastle, Edgar of Brazil, Wanda Earl of Indianapolis, Mrs. Maude Harney of Ferndale and Mrs. Myrtle Reed of Bellmore.
In passing she also leaves to mourn, 16 grandchildren, 20 step-grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 24 step-great-grandchildren and four brothers, Oscar of Mecca, Homer and George of Rockville and James of Bridgeton; two sisters, Mrs. Sophronia Brown and Mrs. Minnie Brown of Rockville. There are many friends and neighbors in the community where she lived who will miss her.
After she was married she lived in the Ferndale community where she worked hard and honestly to keep her home for her family.
In early life she attended church at Pleasant Valley and after moving to Ferndale received much benefit from attending the United Brethren church at Farmers Chapel.
This mother will live long in the wealth of tender memories. She will be remembered by the thoroughness of every task undertaken in her home.
