Samuel was a student before the Civil War, and was unmarried. He enlisted age 20 as a Private in Company "D" (Capt. Harrison's Company), 1st South Carolina Rifles (a/k/a "Orr's Rifles") on 20 July 1861. He was promoted Bugler in early 1862.

He died of disease at the "South Carolina Hospital" in Manchester (then an independent city, now part of the City of Richmond). His grave is unmarked.

NOTE: He appears in the attached Hospital record as "S. A. Webb".
