He dropped out of high school at the age of 17 to join the US Marine Corps. His eighteenth birthday was Pearl Harbor Day, and he was sent to the Pacific Theatre, where he fought in such battles as Peleliu and Guadalcanal. He served in the US military for 23 years, including joining the US Army and serving as an officer in the Korean War. Among his military awards and decorations was the Silver Star.
He was predeceased by his mother, Margaret Ann Hill Taylor; and his father, Donald J MacIvor. He was survived by his wife of 67 years, Isabelle A Weber MacIvor;his son, Douglas Donald MacIvor; his daughter; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and a sister.
Services were held at Ullrey Memorial Chapel, Yuba City, CA, on Wednesday, July 31, 2013. Interment on November 30, 2022.
