He died when the SS Anglo-Californian, enroute from Quebec, Canada to Avonmouth, Bristol, England, with a cargo of 927 Horses, was attacked by German Submarine U.39.

He is also remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial in London, England, but a recent discovery by the "In from the Cold" Project showed that his remains were found floating in the sea of Corbiere in Aug 1915 and he was buried in Jersey.
