Janet Watson Baney also known as "GG" for Great Grandma
Age 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Sunday , November 27, 2022. She was born August 22, 1933 in Philipsburg, PA daughter of the late Mahlon Harris Watson & Ida "Anabel" Lucas Watson. Her loving husband of 57 years, Lewis E. Baney; brothers, Jay & Gary Watson; sister, Sandra Watson, nephew, Andrew Jodon & son-in-law, Paul Morton also preceded her in death. She is survived by her devoted children, Kirk Baney, Lori Morton & Linda Baney; cherished grandchildren, Zachery Morton (Katie Richardson) & Haleigh Morton(Marcus DeLige); precious great grandchildren who were her pride & joy, Makenzee & Braden Morton & Tatum DeLige; brothers, Larry Watson(Judith Hess)& Terry(Judy) Watson; sisters-in-law, Dorothy & Mary Watson; brother-in-law, James Baney; along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews & friends.
In 1953, Janet married Lewis & in 1958 they moved to Elmira, NY. Prior to moving to NY she was a training supervisor & telephone operator. She was entrusted with the privilege of speaking to & connecting calls for the President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, to his brother while he was the President of Penn State, Milton S. Eisenhower. After all of her children were in school, she became a Teacher's Aide at Riverside Elementary & a negotiator at the state level for NYSUT, retiring in 1994. Her love of others allowed her to touch the lives of many children, co-workers, family & friends truly making a difference in her community. She loved her time at Seneca Lake spending the whole summer there with her children, grandchildren & neighbors; while Lew commuted to and from work. Whether she was looking at Seneca Lake, the pond across the street or on trips to Niagara Falls, Hawaii, Florida & Myrtle Beach she loved to watch the sun create diamonds & the moon dance on the water. Her love of critter watching was a preferred topic of conversation; some highlights included seeing a great horned owl & Baltimore Orioles nest with Zachery & Haleigh at the lake, whale watching with Lew in Hawaii & looking down at giant sea turtles, schools of jelly fish & dolphins while parasailing with Linda on her 70th birthday. She especially loved spending time with the family dog, Doozy.
Long time member of the United Methodist Church & a woman of strong faith. As a member of Centenary UMC , which later became New Beginnings, she taught Sunday school, chaperoned youth activities, served on many committees & work teams, as well as, worked at the Food Pantry with Lewis sharing recipes & cooking tips with the participants. They also delivered Meals on Wheels & her genuine kindness and compassion brightened the days of the recipients. She had a lifetime love of cooking & baking and was great at it as shown by winning 1st prize at the Pennsylvania State Farm Show in Harrisburg for the demonstration of making her tea ring.
She taught us all so much & was so very proud of her family. She was an extremely loving, caring, gentle soul who earned her peace. Her "dash" truly made a difference for everyone who knew her. Services will take place privately at the convenience of her family who will cherish their memories of her knowing she loved them to the moon and back.
