Edward F. McConnell, an old and well known farmer, died at his home two miles south of this place at 7 o'clock this morning. Death, which came unexpectedly, was caused by a severe attack of rheumatism. His illness was of short duration and he passed away very peacefully.
He was born in Madison county, New York, April 30, 1816. His early life was spent on the farm with his father in his native county. He was united in marriage, Sept. 9, 1840, to Ann Hoppin, of Lebanon, New York. He, in company with his wife and father and family, came to this place in 1842, and engaged in farming and stock raising. Fine wooled sheep have been a speciality with him.
Mrs. McConnell died June 14, 1853, and he was again married March 13, 1855, to Mary Hoppin, a sister of his first wife. She died Aug. 28, 1877. A third marriage contract was performed by Mr. McConnell, the lady being Mrs. Sarah P. Morse, of Des Moines, Iowa, who still survives him. The ceremony was performed Jan. 18, 1878. He also has a son, James McConnell, an attorney at law in Chicago, and two brothers, Gen. John D. McConnell, and Justice A. B. McConnell, both of Springfield, Ill.
His remains will be removed to Springfield Thursday and interred in Oak Ridge cemetery. The family has the sincere sympathy of the entire community.
