M Eileen Vines, 96, passed away on November 30, 2022, at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Living in Hoopeston, IL.

She was born on November 11, 1926, on a farm near Catlin, IL to Ernie and Mabel (Truman) Winland, and was the middle of seven children. Eileen grew up on the family farm, pitching in to help as needed, especially after the death of her mother when she was only 12 years old. Eileen was considered to be a tomboy and was very gifted athletically. She would often talk of being the only girl that the boys allowed to play baseball and other sports with them.

Eileen went to a one room country school and then graduated from Georgetown High School in 1944. Eileen was the only one of her siblings to attend college. She went to Illinois Wesleyan for two years and then transferred to the University of Illinois, where she graduated in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in Physical Education. Eileen spent many of her summers as a camp counselor for Camp Hitaga, a Campfire Girls camp near Walker, Iowa.

Eileen married Robert H. (Bob) Vines in 1956 in Hoopeston, IL. They were blessed with two children, Robin (Vines) Peterson and Phil Vines. Bob and Eileen were happily married for 44 years until he passed away in 2000. After retiring, she and Bob traveled often and managed to visit all 50 states. They spent several winters in Sun City, AZ near Robin and her family. After Bob's death, Eileen moved to Sun City, where she lived for 16 years. In 2017, she moved back to Hoopeston into Autumn Fields, where she lived out the rest of her life.

Eileen was hired to teach Girl's PE at John Greer High School in Hoopeston right out of college. After taking a break to raise her children, she returned to Hoopeston High School, where she again taught Girl's PE and coached Girls' Volleyball, Bowling and Softball, retiring in 1985. During her coaching career, she took her Volleyball team to the State Finals and her bowling team earned a 2nd Place IL State trophy. Eileen returned to the University of Illinois in the early 1970's to study coaching and get her master's degree.

Eileen was a member of First Christian Church in Hoopeston, Owl Club, Mary Hartwell Club, and a Sorority.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents Ernie & Mable Winland; siblings: Juanita (Rip) Neild, Dale (Frances) Winland, Don (Geraldine) Winland, Robert (Pat) Winland, Larry (Winnie) Winland, and MaryLou (Roy) Burgoyne; and her husband, Robert H. Vines.

Eileen is survived by her daughter Robin (Clayton) Peterson, her son Philip (Kathy) Vines, both of Hoopeston, IL; her 8 grandchildren: Ian (Sara) Peterson, Caitlyn Peterson, and Laurie (Cameron) Macklin of Phoenix, AZ; Evan Vines, Kelsey Vines, Josephine Vines, Matthew Vines, and Emma Vines of Hoopeston; and her 3 great-grandchildren: Hope Macklin, Harland Macklin, and Emily Peterson of Phoenix.

A memorial service will be held at First Christian Church, 502 E. Main St., Hoopeston, IL at 11 am, Sat. Dec. 10th followed by a luncheon in the church basement at noon. A visitation will be held at Anderson Funeral Home, 427 E. Main St., Hoopeston, IL at 4 – 7 pm, Dec. 9th. A private burial will precede the memorial service at Floral Hill Cemetery.
