Staff Sgt. Javares J. Washington of Pensacola, Fla., attended Escambia High School where he played football and was also on the track team. He graduated in 1999 and left Pensacola for Flagstaff, Ariz., to play football on a full scholarship at Northern Arizona University. Due to a scholarship cut he left the university the following season and decided to join the military following in the footsteps of his brother. He joined the Army in 2001 and arrived at Fort Campbell in April, 2007. His awards and decorations include: Army Commendation Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Korea Defense Service Medal; Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon; Army Service Ribbon; Weapons Qualification, M4, Expert; and Aviation Badge. He died at Camp Buehring in Kuwait City, Kuwait, from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident at age 27.
