Edna Alice Wampler was born August 4, 1881 at Indian Springs, Martin, Indiana. She was the oldest child of Frank and Martha Wampler. Her siblings were: Arthur Wampler and Edgar Wampler, both of whom died in infancy. They are buried near their mother in Ragelsville Cemetery. She also had two sisters, Jessie Hawes Wampler who married Orla Ketring, and Vonda who married Burney Broyles.
On July 7, 1899 Edna married Basil Clements (b.ca. 1874) in Martin, Indiana. They had 5 children, four of whom lived to adulthood. They were Sheldon Oswell, Ula Inez, Zula Agnes, George Orel, and Joseph Onerd. Onerd died at age 3. Basil died in 1913 and the location of his grave is unknown.
After Basil died Edna worked doing housekeeping and caring for invalids. She met and married George Sheets, who ran a celery farm in Stark, Ohio. On July 24, 1916 he died following a tragic fall down the staircase in their home.
For a time Edna ran a boarding house in Hartville, OH in an effort to keep her family together. After her daughters married she spent considerable time periods in each of their homes helping to raise their children.
Edna became a housekeeper for Andrew & Jenevra Pettit. He was 30 years Edna's senior, and needed the in-home care she provided after Jenevra's death in 1932 but Edna refused to live in the home of a single man so they were married. He died in 1939.
Sometime during the Great Depression her son, Sheldon, vanished and she never heard from him again.
After Mr. Pettit died Edna provided the same services for Henry Mitchell Murray and his wife, Lucy. After Lucy's death she and Henry married. They remained married until her death in 1957. Henry died in 1960 and they share a headstone in Springlawn Cemetery. The marriage may have been made for pragmatic reasons but they were very happy together.
