Malcolm L. "Mac" Grounds, age 95, of Marion, was reunited with the love of his life, his co-pilot, Jenny, on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at home following an extended illness.
On May 30, 1927, Mac was born in Marion, Ohio, the son of the late James and Louise (Spidel) Grounds.
He attended Marion Harding High School, and put his graduation on hold to enlist in the US Navy on his 17th birthday, lying on his application forms claiming it was his 18th birthday. On May 30, 1944, Mac enlisted to serve in the US Navy to help his fellow countrymen in the battles of World War II. He served aboard the USS General M.B. Stewart, which took new troops to the battle ground and brought back the wounded. He worked his way up to an important job on the ship, serving as their mail clerk.
Upon his honorable discharge in June of 1946, Mac returned home to Marion, Ohio, where became a regular at the Highway Roller Arena on SR 309. He joked that he was a showboating roller skater, trying to get the attention of Genevieve Marie Kester, best known simply as Jenny, who "tripped him in the rink" and whom he was instantly smitten with. After much persistence, he finally convinced her to go on a date with him, and from there the rest was history. Finding a special love in one another, Jenny and Mac were married on July 6, 1947, at the Greenwood E.U.B. Church in Marion. They shared over sixty three magical years of marriage together. She preceded him in death on December 27, 2010.
For 35 years, Mac worked for the Whirlpool Corporation in the Quality Control Department. He would put together and run tests for new models of dryers, and created new processes that are still being used today. He retired in 1990. In the 1960's, Jenny encouraged Mac to learn to fly, which he did under the condition that she too learned to fly to be able to be his co-pilot. They both took quickly to flying, finding they had a knack for it. They enjoyed flying their plane, a 1962 Cessna 172 – N2034Y "Yankee" - to Las Vegas on numerous occasions, Key West, Florida, and all over Ohio. Their love of traveling did not end with just flying, as they took countless trips driving out west together to see the sights and soak in the history. For their golden 50th wedding anniversary, Mac and Jenny took a special trip around the world to Australia, Morocco, Spain, and Egypt for over a month, with hopes of also traveling to India, and Pisa, Italy. Mac was a member of the VFW Post 7201, and loved his Honor Flight trip to Washington DC. He was a member of the Marion Senior Center with Jenny. He also enjoyed photography and rooting on the Cleveland Indians. A perfectionist, Mac took immaculate care of everything; his home, his yard, his cars, his plane…everything. He took amazing care of his wife, Jenny, too. As the years went by, their love only grew stronger. Mac lovingly cared for her, night and day, and they truly cherished one another. Mac is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Including his wife and parents, Mac was preceded in death by all seven of his siblings: James Grounds "Jr.", Anna Ferriman, Jessie "Tiny" Earnestine, Mary Martin, Dwight "Gene" Grounds, Barbara "Bobby" Debolt, and John Bodman. Services honoring Mac's life will be observed at his graveside in Marion Cemetery (use entrance behind Harding Memorial) at 1 PM, on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, with Celebrant Mark Schuring officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Marion County United Veterans Council. The cemetery groundskeepers (Mac's good friends) have been given strict instructions to get Mac as close to Jenny as possible. He will be bringing the bottle of Martini & Rossi Champagne and two glasses with him to toast their reunion. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choosing. On behalf of his family, they would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank you" to Tranquility Hospice, Patti Layne and her caregivers, and his special friends and neighbors for their great care of Mac. Snyder Funeral Homes of Marion are honored to serve Mac and his family, and your condolences may be shared by visiting www.SnyderFuneralHomes.com.
