HARRY W. "PETE" SAWYER, MD In Burlingame, January 29, 2002. Born May 1, 1914 in Twin Falls, Idaho, Dr. Sawyer was the son of two physicians, Bula Belle Sawyer and Harry W. Sawyer Sr., the stepson of well known Nevada educator and historian Byrd Wall Sawyer, and brother to both Milo Sawyer and former Nevada Governor Grant Sawyer. Dr. Sawyer will be lovingly remembered by his wife of more than sixty years, Elizabeth "Buzzie" Best Sawyer of Burlingame, CA, his two children Laeta Sawyer Siri (Gene) and family of Danville, CA, Tom Sawyer, Ed.D. (Lynn) and family of Reno, NV, five grandchildren, along with countless extended family members, loyal friends, trusting patients, and colleagues. Dr. Sawyer began his medical journey at the University of Nevada, Reno, and completed his MD at Washington University School of Medicine. He began his Internships in 1940, first at Southern Pacific Hospital and then St. Francis Memorial Hospital, both in San Francisco. He then served five years in the Medical Corps of the United States Army, including WWII service in France. Returning to San Francisco, he began a private obstetrics and gynecology practice in the city he called home for 36 years. His many honors and appointments include: Assistant Chief of Obstetrics at St. Francis Memorial Hospital, recurrently from 1955-68, Chief of Staff at St. Francis Memorial Hospital 1965-67, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the San Francisco Medical Society 1966-67, Vice President of the Medical Staff of Southern Pacific Hospital from 1964-66, and Associate Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mt. Zion Hospital, 1969-80. He was awarded Fellows from both the International College of Surgeons and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and named a Diplomats of the National Board of Medical Examiners. Dr. Sawyer shared his joy for life by bringing over 6,000 babies into the world during his 45 year career, finally retiring in Burlingame, CA, at age 75. Dr. Sawyer was a prominent community figure; an active member of local Shrine, Mason, Kiwanis, and SIRS groups, along with Temple Methodist Church in San Francisco and First Presbyterian Church in Burlingame. Dr. Sawyer enjoyed extensive travelling with his wife, Family Camp, attending and supporting his children's and grandchildren's many activities and performances, and most of all sharing his laughter, happiness, and strength with friends and family. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 1500 Easton Drive, Burlingame on February 9 at 2:00PM. Donations will be greatly appreciated in memory of Harry W.
