AUGUSTA -- Walter I. Arnold, 91, of Augusta died peacefully at his home after a brief illness on Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, with his family at his side.

Walter was born May 24, 1918, in Sidney, son of Irving and Elsie Arnold.

He worked for 16 years at Gagne & Sons Concrete until his retirement in 1983. Prior to that, he worked for Vin Dunn Cement.

Walter enjoyed camping, playing cribbage, cutting trees and chopping and stacking wood.

He was a lifetime Mason -- a member of the A.F. & A.M. Lodge of Augusta.

He was predeceased by his son, David Arnold; daughter Diane Thibeau; his sister, Maxine Friar; and two brothers, Richard and Robert Arnold.

He is survived by his wife, Norrine; his daughters, Dorothy Andres and her husband, Joseph, of Mesa, Ariz., Wilma Farwell and her husband, Robert, of Saco, and Melanie Pushard and her husband, Richard, of Manchester; his son, Larry and his wife, Carol, of Sidney; his brother, Paul and his wife, Louise, of Vassalboro; and a special stepdaughter, Connie Barnard, of West Gardiner.

There are many stepchildren, grandchildren, nieces and nephews who thought of him as very special.

A memorial celebration of Walter's life will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Faith Christian Church, 280 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Volunteers of Kennebec Valley in Gardiner, c/o Office of Philanthropy, P.O. Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903.
