She worked on the family farm prior to moving to Charlotte to work for Duke Power and, later in life, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
She married Billy Parks Carpenter in 1954, and they established their home in the Mint Hill area. She was a member of Mount Harmony and then Emmanuel Baptist Church.
