John was the third of four children born to Franklin Eugene Engler and Estella Coolbaugh. He married Thursa Jane Long at Wilkes-Barre in 1916, and the couple raised four children: Dorothy Irene, John L., Earl, and William. In 1917, he worked with his brother, Franklin, as a driver for the Miller Oil Company. In 1920, he worked as a helper at a furniture store.
