Benjamin Rowell Bird (who often went by his middle name) was the son of Francis L., a sea captain from England, and Ina (Frost) Bird. He was only three years old when his father died of kidney cancer in July 1891 & was buried at sea in New York Bay. In 1900, when Benjamin was 12, he was listed on the census as a boarder of Abram and Maggie Warren in Saugus. His mother remarried Boston physician Dr. Gustavus Walker in 1904; he died in 1915 and Ina survived him, but her life after that is unknown.

Benjamin married Ines Luella Kent on June 10, 1908. They were divorced by 1917. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 31, 1918 and served in the Ordnance Department until he was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant on March 8, 1919.

He married fellow divorcee Alma Theresa (Stewart) Elwell in 1920. Her son from her previous marriage lived with his father; Benjamin and Alma had no (known) children together.
