Known as the "Paul Revere of the South" John Wisdom made a heroic 67 mile ride by buggy, horse, and mule on May 2, 1863 to Rome, Georgia, arriving just before midnight to warn that Union troops were coming to town to burn and sack the city. He had already seen the destruction brought to Gadsden, Alabama by the Union Troops, and did not want the same fate to destroy his friends in Rome. His name and actions are celebrated in Rome, Georgia, and his home town of Hokes Bluff, Ala. to this day.

Books about him include "The Lightning Mule Brigade: Abel Streight's 1863 Raid Into Alabama" by Robert L. Willett, Jr., "John Wisdom, Citizen Soldier" by Joe Barnes, and "John H. Wisdom, The Man Who Saved Rome" by Louis W. Hollis.
