ROBERTS, Ph.D. DAYTON YOUNG Dayton Young Roberts, age 81, of Hoover, AL, died Tuesday, December 6, 2011, after a lengthy illness. He was born March 22, 1930, and was preceded in death by his parents, Garza Dayton Roberts and Ruth Young Roberts and a sister, Carolyn Roberts Wright. Roberts is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rona Matthews Roberts, formerly of Luverne, AL; daughters Anjirona Roberts Easterday (Mark) of Charleston, SC, and Roxanne Roberts Hankins (Jerry), of Hoover, AL; grandchildren Andrew Easterday, Louis Wesley Easterday, and Mattison Sara Easterday; Sara Emeline Hankins and Dayton Michael Hankins; sisters Billie Ann Roberts Fuller (Harold) of Hoover, AL ,and Mitzi Roberts Garner (Jeep) of Franklin, TN, and numerous nieces and nephews. Roberts served several years in the US Navy, both active and reserve duty and worked in the photo lab on the USS Coral Sea. Later he taught in the Navy's advanced school of photography in Pensacola FL. This early interest in photography lead to a satisfying lifetime hobby. He studied at Harvard and Tulane Universities, the Rochester Institute of Technology and earned his B.A., M.A., and a Ph.D. degree from Florida State University in 1964. He was selected for Florida State's Distinguished Graduate Award in 1981. He was Florida's first State Director of Academic Affairs for the Community College System 1965-68. He has been a department chairman at Winthrop University, SC; Assistant to the President, Broward Community College, FL; Professor and Associate Director of Higher Education, University of Florida, and Provost, Orange Park Campus, St. Johns River Community College, Florida. At Texas Tech University Roberts served as Professor of Higher Education and Department Head for 17 years. He retired from Texas Tech in 1990 and was awarded the honor of Professor Emeritus. In 1995 Texas Tech recognized him with a Distinguished Service Award...for his "doctoral research and publications in Jungian Psychology and for his teaching and leadership while chairman of higher education". In 1996 Roberts and his wife, Rona, retired to the Hoover area to be nearer family. A memorial service will be on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Mt Chapel United Methodist Church, 2541 Rocky Ridge Road, with the Reverend Tom Parish officiating. Immediately following the service, the family will welcome friends for lunch and visitation in the Fireside Room. Memorial gifts may be made to Mt.
