Prime Minister of Portugal. He was a colonial administrator, military officer, politician, and journalist. Manuel Maria Coelho was born on March 6, 1857, in the village of Erveredo, in the city of Chaves, studying in the cities of Braga and Porto, having completed the infantry course at the Army School in Lisbon. Soon after graduation, he founded a weekly newspaper of Republican ideals. In 1885, he married Maria do Loreto Botelho Correia Mourão, with whom he had six children. He was then seconded to the military regiment of Porto during the English Ultimatum, which served as a fuse for the failed republican revolt of January 31, 1891, in which he played a leading role, having been sentenced to 5 years of exile in Angola and São Tomé where he remained until the Implantation of the Republic. He was appointed in 1910 by the provisional republican government as Governor-General of Angola, a post he held until 1912 and interim Governor of Guinea from 1916 to 1917. He was elected democratic deputy in 1921, being one of the most critical voices to the liberal government of António Granjo, which led him to conspiratorial practices, then starting on October 19 of that same year, a peaceful revolution, with the intention of making an independent government, above the parties, which caused the previous government to resign. During that same night, while Manuel Maria Coelho was sworn in as Prime Minister, his predecessor António Granjo and other Republicans were brutally murdered in what became known as the "Bloody Night," and the government was tainted by these events, being only 16 days in office, having even been accused and arrested for the events. He spent the rest of his life writing articles for newspapers on history, philosophy, and science until his death at the Estrela Military Hospital in Lisbon.
