Deacon Lula E. Allgood died at the Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, VA. Her dedication to her faith journey set the direction for her life that became a blessing to many people. She began her Christian walk at Fork Chapel Baptist Church, Warrenton, NC. In 1963 she transferred her membership to Gillfield Baptist Church, Petersburg, VA. It was at Gillfield that she served exceedingly noble. Her services were humble and stellar as a Deacon, Choir Member, and member of the Advanced Stewardship Club, Church Aide Society, Missionary Society, and Women's Bible Class. Her lasting contribution was as Co-Chair of the Heritage Room. This service culminated in the establishment of the Mamie L. Reed Heritage Room that houses historic memorabilia from 1815 to the present. Further, she and the late Barbara Myles Maniego were ordained together in 1973, thus becoming the first ordained deacons in an African American Baptist Church in the United States.

Beyond the church, Lula was a dedicated educator. Having completed the public schools in North Carolina, she graduated from Fayetteville State University with a B.S. Degree and from Virginia State University with a M.S. Degree. For many years, she was a classroom teacher, and Assistant Principal at Curtis Elementary and Principal of Winterpock and Kingsland Elementary Schools.
