MARTIN DONAHUE DEAD NEARLY 103 YEARS OLD
HELPED BUILD THE FIRST RAILROAD IN INDIANA
WAS A NATIVE OF IRELAND
Martin Donahue, who served as a foreman of construction in the building of Indiana's first railroad, died today at his home, 625 Dorman Street. He would have been 103 years old on July 16.
Mr. Donahue was in good health until about three months ago. He had retained all his faculties until that time. He was a native of County Mayo, Ireland. He came to this county in 1848, and to Madison a short time later. There he served as a foreman of construction in the building of the old J. M. & I. railroad. Later he bought a farm near Madison. A few years afterwards he moved to North Vernon, and about twenty-five years ago he came to Indianapolis. He married Miss Anna Baugham (Gaugham), also a native of Ireland, in 1850. Mrs. Donahue died about forty-five years ago. Four children survive. They are Miss Winifred Donahue, who lived with her father; Martin, Jr., of Indianapolis; Mrs. Thomas Kelly, of Shelbyville; and Mrs. George Shepard, of Franklin.
Mr. Donahue was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The funeral will be held at the church Monday morning and burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.
