81177 Gunner C W Haines, 20th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. The battery deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War. They joined the Kimberley relief force in Feb 1900 under Lord Methuen and were deployed about Warrenton, Cape Province (now Northern Cape) in March 1900. They were part of the main Army advance to Bloemfontein and Pretoria and accompanied Lord Methuen eastwards to Lindley in the Orange Free State and thence north to the Transvaal. The battery was put into a force under Smith-Dorrien which was railed to Belfast in last week of Aug 1900 to assist Buller in his advance to Lydenburg. On returning south to the railway the force marched to Koomati Poort, and was present at the review there at the end of Sep 1900. Gunner Haines died of disease at 19 Stationary Hospital, Harrismith on 4 Apr 1902. He was buried on 5 Apr 1902. He is also commemorated on the Royal Artillery Boer War memorial on the corner of Horse Guards Parade and the Mall, at the north-east corner of St James Park, London, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/112037).
