Donald W. Smart (born 6/16/1925) passed away on November 5, 2022 at the age of 97 in Mililani, Hawaii at the home of his eldest son and daughter-in-law. A native of Wisconsin, Don grew up in Wauwatosa, WI, graduated from Wauwatosa High School, and later moved to Brookfield, WI. He was employed for decades by Allis-Chalmers (later becoming Siemens-Allis) beginning at their West Allis, WI facility. In 1974, he was transferred by the company to the New Orleans area, where he lived in New Orleans East and later on the Westbank in Westwego and Marrero. He enjoyed restoring old cars, and after retiring he opened and ran an auto repair shop on Barataria Blvd. in Marrero until he moved to Hawaii in 2020. During WWII, he served in the US Navy as an Aviation Machinist Mate assigned to Fleet Air Wing 3 at the Coco Solo Naval Base in the Panama Canal Zone. In his later years he joined American Legion post 222 in Marrero. In Wisconsin, he was a member of the Lions Club, taught 4-H members to make crystal radios, led Cub Scouts, and taught Sunday school at Wauwatosa Avenue United Methodist Church. In Louisiana, he was an active member of Gretna United Methodist Church, the Ford Fairlane Club, and the Terrytown Golden Agers. He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd Smart and Edna Hahn Smart; his stepmother, Esther Scheunert Bastian Smart; his brother Gerald Smart; sisters Vivian Smart Perkins and Marian Smart Schmitz; stepbrother Grant Bastian; first wife, Jacquelyn Olson Smart; second wife, Elsie Maise; and most recently by his dear friend June Olson. He is survived by his children Scott (Mary), Tristine, and Daniel (Sharon) Smart; grandchildren Stephen and Brian Smart; stepsons Clarence (Diane), Todd (Kim), and Donald Maise; and sister-in-law Betty Buffane, who watched over Don after Elsie's passing. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at Mothe Funeral Home - Harvey (2100 Westbank Expressway, Harvey, LA 70058). Public visitation and funeral service will begin at 9am until 11AM. Funeral Services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11AM. Interment will take place at Westlawn Memorial Park, Gretna (1225 Whitney Ave, Gretna, LA). Private family viewing will begin at 8 A.M., preceding the public viewing.
