Dr. Herman Lee Donovan, a native of Maysville, Kentucky, served as President of the University of Kentucky (UK) from 1941-1956 after heading Eastern Kentucky State University for several years.

Donovan earned his bachelor's degree from UK, a master's from Columbia, and a Ph.D. from George Peabody School for Teachers. He oversaw the desegregation of University of Kentucky in 1949 when Lyman Johnson and about thirty other African American students were admitted under federal court order. Donovan was the author of "Keeping the University Free and Growing," a memoir in which he outlined the difficult decisions he faced while President.
