Joseph Abraham Bockus was born in 1800 most-likely in Massena, New York, United States. He was the son of Abraham Bockus (27 Mar 1769 – 18 Apr 1862) and Eunice Sweetland Bockus (3 Oct 1771 - 30 Mar 1862). They were American-born United Empire Loyalists who sided with the British during the American Revolution. After the British were defeated they first lived in Massena, New York, just south of the St. Lawrence River border with British-ruled Upper Canada. After the War of 1812, where the US again defeated the British, the family crossed the St. Lawrence, settling on a farm in Osnabruck, Stormont County, Upper Canada (Ontario).

Joseph A. Bockus married Rachel Elder (1805-17 Feb 1898), an immigrant from Ulster, Ireland, around 1825 in Stormont County, Ontario. They had 3 sons & 3 daughters between 1827-1845 all in Osnabruck, Stormont, Ontario, Canada.

Joseph A. Bockus died on 22 July 1885 on his farm in Bobcaygeon, Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, and was buried near his parents at Woodlands East Cemetery, Osnabruck Township, Stormont County, a Lost Villages Cemetery, historic villages and cemeteries affected by the St. Lawrence River seaway and power projects. Headstone relocated to Upper Canada. It is Village. His wife died on 17 Feb 1898 and was buried by her late husband.
