Herbert F. Downes, 90, of Louisville passed away December 18, 2012 at Atria St. Matthews. He was born on July 19, 1922 to the late Herbert & Mamie Davis Downes. Herb was a veteran serving during WWII in the United States Army Signal Corp. He was a member of the American Legion Post #201; a retired volunteer for the Buechel Fire Department and was a member of the Southeast Christian Church. He was in sales with Feed & Seed Company for many years. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by first and second wives, Ginnie Downes and Catherine Downes; a brother, Charles Downes; and a sister, Mary Belle Rountree. He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Joan Hellems Downes; two children, Kenneth Downes (June) and Dennis Downes (Diane); three stepchildren, David Blanchard (Kathy), Steven Blanchard (Susan) and Scott Phelps (Diane); grandchildren, Kevin, Tony & Andy Downes; eight step-grandchildren, Trey, Kevin, David, Elizabeth, Evie, Chad, Clint and Steven; eleven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eleanor Chappell. A visitation celebrating Herb's life will be Friday December 21, 2012 from 4-7 p.m. at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road. Funeral services will be private. Expressions of sympathy are suggested to Hosparus.
