Anchorage resident Valda Marian Shirley, 65, died Jan. 8 at home after a valient but brief fight against cancer. There was a visitation followed by a funeral at Kehl's Forest Lawn Chapel, with the Rev. Rick Cavens of St. Mark's Lutheran Church officiating. Burial was in the spring at Angelus Memorial Park.

Born Aug. 4, 1927, in Bedett, Minn., Mrs. Shirley was a 34-year resident of Alaska, spending most of her time in the Copper River Basin. Her family said she was a person of many talents. Mrs. Shirley was postmaster in Gakona for nine years and managed the historic Gakona Lodge for five years. She and two close friends started a music group called "The Coppertones," in which Mrs. Shirley was a singer and drum player. She also loved to write and was a contributer to what was then called "The Copper River Current" newspaper. In the 1960s, she was an avid snowmachiner and racer. Her greatest talent was being a wife and mother. She had always been a great support for family and friends and was loved by all, her family said. For the last 19 years, Mrs. Shirley had lived in Anchorage. She was very active in the Anchorage Senior Center, and created many handicrafts for their gift shop.

She is survived by her husband, William of Anchorage; one son, Stacey Falk of Anchorage; three daughters, Trudy Wilson of Kenai, Sandra Lappi of Gakona, and Marcey Ebertowski of Eagle River; three brothers, Larry Sjoblom of Eugene, Ore., Ralph Sjoblom of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Glen Sjoblom of Great Falls, Va.; two sisters, Evelyn Heinzde of St. Paul, Minn., and Ruby Erickson of Bloomington, Minn.; and 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Shirley was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Falk; and a daughter, Lynn Rowe. Arrangements were handled by Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary and Crematory.
