Maurice Ludlum Cowl (in religion Francis) was born in New York on December 3, 1859. He was graduated from Trinity College, Hartford (B.A. 1883, M.A. 1886), and Berkeley Divinity School (Middletown, Connecticut 1887) before ordination to the priesthood by the Episcopal Bishop of Connecticut in 1888. He was assistant priest at Holy Trinity, Middletown and the Church of the Evangelists, Philadelphia before becoming assistant and then rector at St. Elisabeth's, Philadelphia (1888-1892, 1892-1896). Cowl left the Protestant Episcopal Church in May, 1908 during the Open Pulpit Controversy and was ordained to the priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church in June of 1911. He organized St. Laurence Catholic Church in 1917 and died as rector emeritus in Philadelphia on March 1, 1934.
