Dorothy was born on July 20. 1907, in Davis, WV. She was the second of nine children born to Lorenzo Dow and Rosetta Carr Justice: older brother Dorsey, and younger siblings Nellie, Marie, Edith, George, Everett, Lorenzo, and Quentin. As a child, Dorothy helped with her younger siblings and delivered the milk her family sold.
As a teenager, Dorothy attended nurses training at Elkins City Hospital. While working at the hospital, Dorothy saved the life of a patient who was injured in a mining accident, and ultimately married his brother, Harry Lowell Bowers. Dorothy and Harry were married October 20, 1927, in Parsons, WV.
Although Dorothy finished her nurses training in 1928, she took time to raise her family before she began working at the Beckley Hospital in 1943.
Dorothy raised her family in the coal towns of West Virginia where they used a woodstove for heat and had no indoor plumbing, but she helped Harry study to pass the mine foreman exam, and worked hard to make life good for her family. She raised one son and five daughters, and made sure they were all aware of the value of a college education. Ultimately, those five children all attended college and earned a total of eight college degrees.
Dorothy was survived by her husband, and her children, Harry Lowell Bowers, Jr., Ella Lorraine (William) Albrecht, Marguerite Harraetta Bowers, Virginia (Harry) Gates, and Judy (Larry) Williams.
