William Stanley Wascher was born Nov. 28, 1942, in Champaign and passed peacefully Monday, Jan. 16, 2023, with his family at his bedside in Murfreesboro, Tenn., after a three-year battle with lung cancer.

Bill lived a very full life. He was raised in the church, active in sports and received his "God and Country" Award in Scouts at 15.

He started delivering newspapers at age 7 and worked ever since. At age 21, he became an Illinois state trooper, then later worked at Sandea National Laboratory in New Mexico with Q clearance. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years, then returned to Champaign and worked for 20 years for the Champaign County Sheriff's Office. He retired for five years in Florida, then spent his last 13 years in Tennessee.

He loved his golf and was fair in all games. He enjoyed life with church, golf and working at Dartmore marina. He was known for his wild stories and boat tours around the lake. He loved to feed the birds and care for his family and pets. He was a hero to many people.

Bill is survived by his wife of 40 years, Roberta; a brother, Jerry (Debbie) Wascher; two stepchildren, Jill (Mike) Fidler and John (Patty) McCarty; four grandchildren, Ryan McCarty, Lucas McCarty, Meghan McCarty and Jacob McCarty; and three great-grandchildren, Keegan McCarty and Lennon and Lilly Fauraman.

He was predeceased by his parents, Vern and Junita Wascher; and grandparents, Jack and Ida Wascher.

A celebration of life service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 114 Stonehenge Drive, Crossville, Tenn., with visitation from noon to 1 p.m. and Pastor Moses Han officiating. A second celebration of life service will be at 1 p.m. Satuday, Feb. 11, 2023, Countryside United Methodist Church, 1807 County Road 1000 N, Urbana, with visitation from noon to 1 p.m. and Pastor Jeff Stahl officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Sidney Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
