CHESAPEAKE, VA. - Howard E. Smith Jr. passed from this world to the next in the presence of his loving and devoted wife of 48 years, Aline, in the early morning Feb. 22, 2008. He was born May 25, 1934, in Craven County, North Carolina, to the late Howard E. Smith and Hazel M. Smith and lived a life filled with love, laughter and success. The Silver Fox is survived by his wife, Aline Rice Smith; his son and grandson, Craig Douglas Smith and Brandon Scott Smith; his daughter, son-in-law and his two young grandsons, J. Fred and Andrea E. Neuman, John Howard "Jack" Neuman and William Brooks Neuman. He is survived by many loving brothers and sisters by marriage: Tom and Sue McFarland, Bobby and Barbara Rice and their son, Robert, David and Wanda Rice and their children, Lisa and Todd and grandson, Hunter, Wanda Rice and her sons, Kevin, Adam and Jason, Emanuel and Sandra Nozzarella, John and Evelyn Barras and Debra G. Rice. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 224 S. Military Highway, where Smitty was a lifelong member. The Rev. John Eidam will officiate. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials are welcome in the form of floral tributes or charitable donations to St. Peter's Episcopal Church.
