Thomas Edwin "Ed" Cecil, 85, of Elizabethtown Kentucky, passed away at his home on January 27, 2023. He was born on August 10, 1937 in St. John, Kentucky.
He graduated Rineyville High School. He served in the United States Navy, then became a barber at Fort Knox. He was employed by Sears, Roebuck and CO for 27 years, retiring in 1997. Ed was a parishioner of St. James Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus counsel number 1455, where he served as Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator of the 4th degree. He and other members with Eternal Life of Bardstown were instrumental in bringing Saint Teresa of Calcutta to Louisville where she shared her mission of advocating for the poor. Ed dedicated his life to the protection of the unborn child. As a member of the Right to Life movement he shared his devotion for the sanctity of life by being a compassionate educator and participating in countless marches in both Frankfort and Washington DC.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents James S Cecil and Gladys M Cecil, five brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Rose Pawley Cecil, his six children, Mark Cecil, Beth Cecil, Joanne Messenger (Brian), Amy Cecil, Mary Cecil and Andrew Cecil (Sarah); 9 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; his youngest brother, Rowan Cecil; and his many nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at St. James Catholic Church in Elizabethtown, KY. Burial will follow at St. John the Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. and continues after 9 a.m. Wednesday.
