Melvin Eugene "Gene" Townsend, Sr., 66, of Riser Road, passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at Self Regional Medical Center. Born in Laurens County, he was a son of the late Thomas Ulus and Lina Gentry Townsend. He was a US Navy Veteran and was a retired Machinist. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Laurens, a Mason at the Cross Hill Lodge, and Shriner. Surviving are three sons, Melvin E. Townsend, Jr. and wife, Toni Jaye of Fountain Inn, John Thomas Townsend of Fountain Inn, and Walter Anthony Townsend and fiancée, Theresa Hilley of Laurens; one step daughter, Debra Lynn Axson and husband, Charles of Laurens; one brother, Johnny Townsend and wife, Rachel of Laurens; two grandchildren, Andrew Dylan Townsend and Ryan Neil Townsend; and one step grandchild, Michael Axson.
He was predeceased by three brothers, R.B., J.R., and Forrest Townsend.
Funeral services will be 2:00, Saturday, February 16, 2008 at The Kennedy Mortuary conducted by Pastor George Gardner with entombment at Forest Lawn Mausoleum with Masonic Rites and Military Honors.
The family will be at 10 Ashley Hall Road, Fountain Inn and will receive friends on Friday, February 15, 2008 at The Kennedy Mortuary from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.
