Ebenezer Barrat was the 4th of 11 children of Thomas Barrat and Charlotte (Vincent) Barrat who were born between 1840 and 1859. At the age of 15, Ebenezer was an apprentice draper in Croydon, Surrey, England. His occupation for over 30 years was a dyer of cloth working in Kensington, Brompton, London, England. In 1872, Ebenezer married Emma Blomfield and they had one son, Arthur Blomfield Barrat, who emigrated to Canada in 1903.
