George Wayne Baker, age 87, Senior Chief United States Navy (Retired), passed away peacefully at home on January 26, 2023, in Norfolk, Virginia. George was born February 19, 1935 in Galveston, Texas. He was the son of the late Edgar Roy and Katherine Elizabeth Epperson Baker.

George proudly served in the State of Texas National Guard for 1 year and he also served in the United States Navy for 21 years. He enlisted in the Navy, April 30, 1952 and honorably retired September 4, 1973. Early in his career, he proudly served aboard the Navy's surface ships USS ROMULUS, USS TORTUGA, USS WHETSTONE, USS MOLALA, and USS AJAX. He later transferred to the elite United State Navy Submarine Service. During this period of his career, George became a proud submariner who served aboard USS ROBERT E. LEE, USS GEORGE BANCROFT, and USS BLUEFISH. Throughout his service, he was recognized with several commendations awards and medals.

Following his retirement from the Navy, George went to work at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, where, after 20 years, he honorably retired again as a Production Controller.

He was the youngest of 8 children and was preceded in death by 5 brothers; Earl, Roy, Mickey, Paul and Donald Baker and 2 sisters; Katherine Baker Dalton and Doris Baker Malone. He is survived by his sisters in law Dee Baker, Phyllis (Robert) Benson and his mother in law Rosemary Bacon.

George was a devoted and loving husband. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 35 years, Sandra Baker. They were married Valentine's Day 1987 and remained sweethearts throughout their precious years together.

He was a caring and loving father to a large family. George leaves behind his children, Karen Cracraft, Diane Hunley, Rick Hunley; Georgiann, Donald and David Baker; stepsons Steve (predeceased FAG #115696300), Ray, Tom, John and Jerry Lockhart. Additionally, George leaves behind 20 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

George also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews in Texas, Tennessee and South Carolina that he loved and cherished.

He loved to fish off of his backyard pier. He also enjoyed woodworking in his shop and was known to be able to work on and fix anything. George had a zest for life and was blessed with many lifelong friends. He thoroughly enjoyed the sharing of many of his stories with everyone. He remained grateful for the many memories made with everyone in his life. The family would like to recognize a special friend Debbie Perry for all of her love and support.

George was a proud member of the USS BLUEFISH (SSN 675) Association. He maintained friendships with many lifelong shipmates with whom he had the distinct honor to serve with during his Naval career. He was also an active member of the American Legion Post 327 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3160.

We like to convey a special thank you to VFW Posts 4809 and 3160 for their support during this time.
