Haskell Leroy Broyles, age 97, passed away January 31, 2023.

He was born January 27, 1926, in Union Township, Stone County, Arkansas, the son of Walter W. and Laura Broyles. He was preceded in death by brothers Herman D. and Walter H Broyles, and sister Theola Finch.

Haskell served in the U.S. Merchant Marines, and volunteered at the age of 17. In 1943 he trained on Catalina Island, off the California Coast. He sailed on tankers in the Engine Department, carrying oil and gasoline to the Pacific Fleet, until the war ended in August, 1945.

He saved his money and paid his way through four years of college. He attended Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, Arkansas, from 1947-1951. He received a commission as a Second Lieutenant through the ROTC, and was called to active duty in August, 1951. He was assigned to the Army of Occupation with the First Calvary Division in Japan. He was assigned to the 45th Division, U.S. Army in Korea as a Platoon Leader. A promotion to First Lieutenant followed with a Combat Infantry Badge and a Bronze Star with valor. He was released from active duty in April, 1953.

He attended Graduate School at the University of Kansas, Lawrence Kansas. He taught in the Denver Public School System before entering the Federal Bureau of Investigation on January, 1955. After FBI training at the Academy, Quantico, Virginia, he was assigned to the Los Angeles Office. His next assignment was to the New York Office for five years. His next assignment was to the FBI Academy, Quantico, Virginia. He was a Firearms Instructor, teaching agents how to shoot. One of his duties was to shoot a revolver, and sub-machine gun for the tourists visiting the FBI Headquarters, Washington, D.C. The next assignment was at the FBI Headquarters, supervising investigations. This followed the Inspections Division, inspecting field offices throughout the country. In September, 1976, he retired and accepted a position with the Wytheville Community College as a Professor in the Police Science Program. He retired in 1984.

He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Chesapeake, VA. He was also a member of the Lions Club and the Wytheville, Virginia Golf Club.

He was married to Patricia Caroline Whittington for 66 years, who was also employed with the FBI. They have four children: Diana Burton; Thomas Broyles and wife Jacqui; Caroline Elizabeth and husband Commander Larry Prevost; Donald Lee Broyles and wife Becky. He leaves eight grandchildren: Jonathan Broyles and wife Lauren; Rachel Broyles; Candra King, husband Ryan; David and Catherine Prevost; Logan, Catherine and Michael Broyles. Haskell joins Matthew Broyles and John Burton in heaven.

A committal service with military honors will be held at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veteran's Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia.
