Son of John and Mary (Grant) Bayard. This is the second child the couple named William Grant; the first was born and died in 1784. Mary (Grant) Bayard died just a few weeks after the birth of the second William Grant, possibly of complications or an infection related to childbirth.

Originally interred in the Second Presbyterian burial ground. Removed to Laurel Hill Cemetery when the churchyard was cleared in 1867.
