Marcia Jane Self Nolan, 82, passed away Thursday, February 2, 2023, at Beacon Place Hospice. Born October 21, 1940, in Shelby, NC, Marcia was the daughter of the late JB and Willie Self.

She graduated from Greensboro Senior HS, attended Brevard College and graduated from Cabarrus School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse and worked for Moses Cone in the ICU for many years.

Marcia attended Duke University for hemodialysis training and was one of the first nurses to work in the Hemodialysis unit and the Cardiac Cath Lab. She was pivotal in the changing of the dress code for nurses; it was required they wear dresses. Her mother made her a white pant suit that she wore to work; it wasn't long after that most nurses followed her example and started to wear pants to work.

Later in her career, she worked for Dr.'s Farley, Abrams, Streck and Martin in their surgical practice up until her retirement. When she and her sister were out and about shopping, having lunch or running errands, Marcia would run into her patients that she cared for. She made a difference in their lives. Marcia loved to travel and loved road trips both short and long. She loved to travel to other countries and all over the US. She loved to eat out, loved her cats and most of all, she loved her family.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nolan was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Tom Nolan, a Cardiac Pulmonary Surgeon who started the Cardiac Cath Lab at Moses Cone Hospital. She is survived by her sister, Nancy Waldrop of Greensboro; brother, JB Self Jr. (Cathy) of Greensboro; her adored niece, Jane Waldrop Williams (Joe) of Huntsville, Ala.; and her adored nephew, Jason Waldrop (Diana) of Charlotte; her great-nephew, Will Waldrop of Charlotte, N.C.; great-niece, Piper Williams of Huntsville, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.

Marcia was a member of Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church. To honor Marcia's wishes there will be no services. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
