Inventor and Businessman. Albert M. Butz was an innovator of the modern automated electronic and mechanical control industry, and he is considered one of the founders of what is now Honeywell International Incorporated. Born in Switzerland, the son of John and Kate Butz, his family came to America in 1855 (some sources say 1857). He served in the 47th Wisconsin Infantry near the end of the Civil War and later settled in Minnesota where in the 1880s he invented the forerunner of the modern thermostat and formed the Butz Thermo-Electric Regulator Company. In 1888, he sold his control device patents to the Consolidated Temperature Controlling Company, which later merged with the Honeywell Heating Specialty Company. Before his death at age 55, Albert and his wife Ella moved to Illinois.
