Wilder J Roper is the son of John and Susannah Harrington Roper. He married Sarah C Mitts, his first cousin, on September 11, 1873 in Barron, Barron County, Wisconsin. They were the parents of 6 children. Four of them died by 1884 before Wilder and Sarah moved to Pierce County, Nebraska. His only surviving son passed away on December 23, 1898 in Pierce, Pierce County, Nebraska. He was a member of the Fraternal Union of America and the Masonic Lodge.

Wilder Julius Roper passed away Monday evening at 7 o'clock after a long illness. For some time he had been afflicted with catarrah and ulceration of the stomach caused by the grip and have been growing slowly weaker, though his wonderful vitality kept him up and he was but confined to his bed the last eight days. Deceased was 53 years 4 months and 21 days old at the time of death. Mrs. J. E. Marshall of Foster, and the bereaved widow were being the only surviving members of the family. He was born in Baraboo, Sauk County, Wisconsin , the 12th day of June 1852. He was immersed and joined the Free Will Baptist Church when he was 20 years old. He married Sarah Mitts in 1873 in Barron, Wisconsin, and from their union 6 children were born, four dying in infancy, while their son Fred died at Pierce in 1898. Deceased came to Nebraska 16 years ago and made his home in the State until his death called him home to a better land. He was conscious to the last and bid his wife, daughter, and grandchildren a last goodbye expressing his willingness to go and peace with his maker Telegrams were sent to deceased's brothers and sisters. His sister, Mrs. Jennie Bingham , of Redfield, S.D., was the only one able to get here in time to attend the funeral. Services were held Wednesday afternoon at the M.E. Church, Rev. McDonald conducting same assisted by Rev. A. G. Brande. The Masonic and M.W.A. orders attended in a body, the honorary pall bearers being from the Masonic Fraternity. The remains were laid to rest in Prospect View Cemetery. In the death of Mr. Roper this community has lost a good citizen and neighbor and his family a kind loving husband and father. The CALL unites in sincere expression of sympathy for the bereaved one.
