Henry is listed on the 1860 Calhoun County, Miss Census at Big Creek with his parents. According to Ola Mathews Turney, he was in the cattle business with Charles Henry Mathews prior to his marriage. It was through Henry Gaines that Charles Henry Mathews came to meet his future wife, Emma Mattie Gaines, younger sister of Henry. That was in Brazoria County, Texas in 1889. On nov 7, 1893, Henry Gaines and Tom Kelly (who later married Henry's younger sister, Hattie B. Gaines) bought land in the Walker County Texas from J.B. Jones. (DB 7, pg 592) Wife, Laura is shown on the 1900 Walker County, Texas census with her two children, Ida age 5 and Henry age 3 at the home of her father-in-law, John W. Gaines, and his children, George, Rufus, Tom, Louis and his brother, James Gaines. On 25 Jul 1895, Henry & Laura bought land from Tom and Hattie B. Kelly in Walker Co. They had a short life together, just a little under 4 years. The last records we have pertaining to Laura M. Akins Gaines is a copy of a deed dated Oct 20, 1900, showing that Mrs. Laura M. Gaines, survivor of the community estate of herself and her deceased husband, Henry Gaines, of the county of Walker, sold 200 acres of land to B.A. Eastham. This deed was filed for record 25 Feb 1901.
