Born to Samuel & Dorcas (Gabriel) Earhart, who's families were some of the early settlers to Athens County and the southern sections of Ohio.

She married Joseph Rigg in 1850. A son, Charles was born to them in 1851. Another son Samuel would follow in 1852. They lead a rather nomadic life early on with Joseph moving the family to various places in Pennsylvania and Ohio, finally settling in Pomeroy, Ohio until 1858 when he moved the family to a farm in Georgia hoping for a better life. Unfortunately, due to ideological differences with the surrounding community his stay there would be short. His obituary states that fearing for his life and under cover of darkness he was forced to leave the farm and his family to find another home for them.

Joseph is recorded as being in Champaign Township, Champaign County, Illinois in the 1860 federal census living with the Brownings. Catherine and their sons don't appear in Champaign Township until the 1870 census although they were here well before that time. Catherine and Joseph would remain here until Joseph's death in 1882. Shortly after her husband's death she removed to Beatrice, Nebraska to live with Charles until her death in 1899. Her sons would bring her back to Urbana, Illinois to be interred beside her husband in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
