Thomas "Tommy" Eugene Hayworth, Sr., 88, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2015, at Beacon Place Hospice.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, July 27, 2015, at the First Moravian Church, 304 South Elam Avenue with Pastor Anthony E. "Tony" Hayworth officiating. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park, 6000 High Point Road.

Tommy was born May 20, 1927, the son of the late Robert Douglas and Minnie Hayworth, in Guilford County, NC. He graduated from Greensboro Senior High School, Greensboro School of Watch Making and attended Greensboro Evening College. He joined the US Navy in June of 1945, and was aboard the Battleship USS Indiana. After receiving his honorable discharge in August of 1946, Tommy worked with Western Electric; now known as AT&T for 33 years until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the Young at Heart Club made up of retirees from AT&T.

In 1950, a young lady by the name of Carole Peterson moved to Greensboro, NC from Cincinnati and met her future husband Tommy while singing in the choir at First Moravian Church. He had been a member at the church since March 17, 1940 where he sang in the choir for about 75 years and was a tenor soloist for many of those years.

Carole married the love of her life, Tommy, on July 17, 1955.

Tommy, very faithful to his church, was the recipient of the Appreciation Award in March 2000, for his 30 years of volunteering, dedicated service and long care of the buildings at the First Moravian Church. Anyone who needed any kind of help, Tommy was always willing to lend a hand. He was a kind and giving man who will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hayworth was preceded in death by his brothers, Julius Hayworth, Robert "Dick" Hayworth and his sisters, Louise Fagan, Dot Grant and Madeline Manning.

Those left to cherish his memory is his loving with of 60 years, Carole Peterson Hayworth of the home; son, Thomas "Gene" Hayworth of Greensboro; granddaughter, Jessica Johnson; great granddaughter, Carmen Johnson both of Thomasville; sister, Helen Sanginite of Greensboro; sister-in-law, Janet P. Blackburn; brother-in-law, Jimmy Blackburn both of Jamestown; special niece and nephew, Jane G. McKinney and Kent Carter both of Greensboro. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. prior to the service in the Old Fellowship Hall at the church.

Mrs. Hayworth and her family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Wesley Long Hospital, Beacon Place Hospice and Gentiva Home Health Care for the care and compassion given to Tommy while in their care.
