Father Thaddeus (Ted) Blaszczyk, 80, entered eternal life in Tamarac, Florida. He served in the priesthood for 54 years.
Fr. Blaszczyk was one of five children of Stanley and Sophie Blaszczyk. He attended St. Florian School in Hamtramck, served as an altar boy, and sang in the parish choir. He entered Sacred Heart Seminary in 1941 to finish high school and later earn a bachelor's degree. Fr. Blaszczyk received a Master of Divinity degree from SS. Cyril & Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake in 1953. He was then ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Detroit along with 15 classmates on June 6, 1953, by Cardinal Edward Mooney at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit.

As a young man, he had the opportunity to pursue a career in sports. While at Sacred Heart Seminary, he was approached by professional baseball scouts after he hit a famous home run into the upper deck at Tiger Stadium during an organized baseball game. He also had the ability to play tennis, softball and "any sport but hockey." However, the priesthood was always Fr. Blaszczyk's passion. He always retained a love of sports, and enjoyed watching ballgames and playing golf. In 1973, he helped found the Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame, which is in Hamtramck, Michigan. Fr. Blaszczyk also enjoyed playing cards, going to the theatre and traveling. He visited national parks throughout the United States, and Poland. However, he always put his ministry first, his friends said, even assisting at a parish in Florida as a senior priest.

Fr. Blaszczyk's many assignments included serving as associate pastor at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Wyandotte; SS. Peter and Paul, Detroit; St. Stanislaus, Detroit; and Sacred Heart, Dearborn; chaplain at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit; vicar of the Old North Central Vicariate; chairman of the Presbyteral Council; and pastor at Our Lady Queen of Apostles, Hamtramck, and St. Alan, Troy.

Fr. Blaska, a friend throughout the years, said Fr. Blaszczyk's life resembled a message from St. Paul to the Corinthians: "While all the runners in the stadium take part in the race, the award goes to one man. In that case, run so as to win. Athletes deny themselves all sorts of things. They do this to win a crown of leaves that withers, but we a crown that is imperishable (1 Corinthians 9, 24-25)."

Father Blaszczyk is survived by a sister, Lillian (Harold) Stuart; a sister-in-law, Mary; several nieces and nephews; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Stanley and Sophie Blaszczyk; brothers, Casmere and Stanley Blaszczyk, and his sister, Bernice (the late John) Czarnecki. Bernice just entered eternal life on January 31, 2008. She was 89 years old. Her Funeral Mass was at St. Florian Catholic Church in Hamtramck on February 4, 2008, at 10 a.m. Internment was at Mt. Olivet in Detroit.

Condolences may be sent to his nephew, Dennis Czarnecki, 3782 Darlington Road N., Bloomfield Hills, MI 48301. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the SS. Cyril & Methodius Seminary, 3535 Indian Trail, Orchard Lake, MI 48324.

Visitation: Monday, February 25, 2008, 4-9 p.m., at St. Alan Parish, 2345 Coolidge Highway, Troy, with a Rosary at 4:30 p.m., and a Scripture Service at 7 p.m.

Visitation: Tuesday, February 26, 2008, at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Parish, 11300 Conant, Hamtramck, 4-9 p.m., with a Mass at 6:30 p.m.

Father Blaszczyk will lie in state at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Parish on Wednesday, February 27, 2008, 9 a.m. until the celebration of his funeral Mass at 11 a.m.
