He served in the U.S. Army for two years before returning home. Richard spent 41 years at American Sterilizer until his retirement. Afterwards, he worked as a doorman at the Siebenbuerger Club. Richard lived and breathed Cathedral Prep, he attended all the football and basketball games, and later in life he even live-streamed the games. He was a lifetime Detroit Tigers Fan. He coached Little League baseball for many years. Richard was a longtime parishioner and volunteered at many parish events at Our Lady of Peace Church since its founding. He also enjoyed bowling, throwing horseshoes, and playing cards with his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Richard is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane (Saeger) Abel, a sister, Mary Ellen Martin, and a brother, William Abel.
He is survived by his three daughters, Susan Hofius (Dale), Judith Abel, and Linda Pope, one son, Richard Abel, Jr. all of Erie, eleven grandchildren, Matthew, Alison, Lauren, Steven, David, Kelsey, Katie, Destiny, Claire, Kevin, and Emily, and one great-granddaughter, Olivia. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Friends may call on Friday at the Kloecker Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 2502 Sassafras St. Erie, PA 16502 from 3 pm until 7 pm and are invited to the prayer service at the funeral home at 9:15 am on Saturday followed by the Funeral Mass at 10 am at Our Lady of Peace Church.
