Robert John Borneman, 57, passed away on February 12, 2023, in his lifelong family home in Ventura, CA, surrounded by a circle of close friends and family. Robert was an educator, mentor, world traveler, philosopher and musician. He was a beloved teacher at Oxnard High School for many years where he dedicated his life to sharing his passion for learning and discovery with his students.
Apart from stints in school and teaching English in Madrid, Spain; Robert, Bobby, Bob or Mr. Borneman (depending on when and how you knew him) lived his entire life in Ventura in a family actively involved in the community. He attended Montalvo Elementary School, Anacapa Junior High School, Buena High School and finished high school at Fountain Valley School in Colorado. He received a BA from Oberlin University, MA from San Diego State, teaching credential from California Lutheran University, an MA from UCSB and was recently a doctoral candidate at UCSB, complete except for the final dissertation.
Robert was an avid traveler who loved to explore new cultures and meet new people. He enjoyed discussing politics and was always up for a good board game or online gaming session. Robert also greatly enjoyed music and composed several pieces that were publicly performed. Robert's love for music extended to his travels, where he sought to learn about different cultures' music and bring it back to his students. He was an avid and prolific writer, recently completing an 800-page memoir with tales of his travels and philosophies of life.
Travel created a passion for fine dining and wines. Dining out with Bob always included ordering dishes "for the table" so as to taste as much of the menu as possible. He loved to spend hours laboring over a luscious Tortilla de Patatas and accompanying sangria which he perfected while living in Spain. He enjoyed weekly sushi lunches with his father in Ventura at the Sumo restaurant for several decades.
Robert's true calling, however, was teaching at Oxnard High School, where he impacted countless young minds with his passion for education. He truly made the grade as a beloved mentor and friend to many and was named Ventura County Teacher of the year in 1998. He was a coach for the school's Academic Decathlon team, leading to an unprecedented first place Division 3 statewide win in 2018.
But Robert was not just a teacher; he was a mentor, a guide, and a friend. His students looked up to him, not just for his vast knowledge, but for his kindness, his patience, and his unwavering belief in their potential. He inspired countless students to continue on to higher education, many of them being the first in their families to attend college. He was a beacon of light in a world that so often feels dark and uncertain. Many, many students have posted tributes to "Mr. Borneman" which are available on YouTube.
Robert is survived by his sister, Merry Kindred. He was preceded in death by his father, John Borneman, his mother, Linda Borneman, and his sister, Kaye Borneman and numerous beloved feline friends.
Although Robert's journey has ended, his legacy will continue through the countless lives he has touched. He was a true inspiration to us all and will forever be remembered for his love of and his unwavering commitment to his students.
Robert will be honored at a Celebration of Life on June 17, 2023 at Oxnard High School at 11:00 AM. Family and friends are invited to share memories and say goodbye to this wonderful soul. Please look for the details on Facebook.
Those who would like to honor him with a memorial contribution are asked to contribute to a scholarship fund being established with the cooperation of Oxnard High School.
